Building, renovating and extending in Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets holds some of the oldest surviving domestic architecture in London alongside some of its newest. Spitalfields and Wapping contain early eighteenth-century houses of genuine rarity; Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs are almost entirely post-1990 apartment stock.

Our work splits along the same line. Heritage renovation and repair at one end — careful, consented, slow — and apartment refurbishment and commercial fit-out at the other, governed by building management rather than conservation officers.

The housing stock in Tower Hamlets

Early Georgian terraces in Spitalfields and Wapping, dense Victorian terraces through Bethnal Green, Bow and Mile End, extensive post-war estate housing, and large-scale modern apartment development across Canary Wharf, Poplar and the Isle of Dogs.

Two very different regimes

In the historic core, expect listed building consent, conservation area control and a conservation officer with strong views on windows, brick and shopfronts. In the modern apartment stock, expect a managing agent, a licence to alter, restricted working hours, lift bookings and protection requirements for common parts. Knowing which regime you are in determines the entire programme.

Planning note. Designations change, and two neighbouring streets can sit under entirely different rules. We confirm the conservation area status, any Article 4 direction and the relevant local policy for your specific address at survey stage — before any design work is paid for.

Local FAQs

Building in Tower Hamlets — common questions

Yes, with consent. Listed work in this area is closely watched, and alterations that would be trivial elsewhere — a new partition, a replacement staircase, changing a fireplace — need consent. We work to the approved scheme and the conservation officer's conditions.

We provide the drawings, specification and method statement the managing agent will ask for, and work to whatever restrictions the licence imposes. The application itself is made by you as leaseholder.

Regularly. Most are single-storey rear or side return infills, and whether they fall under permitted development depends on conservation area status, which varies street by street across both.
