Building, renovating and extending in Hounslow

Hounslow spans a wide spectrum. Chiswick holds highly desirable Victorian and Edwardian terraced and semi-detached stock under significant conservation control, where side returns, loft conversions and careful period renovation are the core work.

West of that, Isleworth, Osterley, Heston and Feltham bring interwar and post-war suburban housing on larger plots with far more permitted development headroom, where the projects are bigger and the constraints fewer.

The housing stock in Hounslow

Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis across Chiswick and parts of Brentford and Isleworth. Georgian survivals along the river at Isleworth and Brentford. Extensive interwar semi-detached suburbia through Osterley, Heston, Hounslow and Feltham. Post-war estate housing and substantial new riverside apartment development at Brentford.

Chiswick is controlled; the west of the borough is not

Chiswick contains a number of conservation areas including Bedford Park on the Ealing boundary, Grove Park, Strand on the Green and Chiswick Old Town, several with Article 4 directions removing permitted development rights. Riverside properties at Strand on the Green, Isleworth and Brentford sit within Thames flood risk zones. West of Hounslow the picture is much simpler, with standard permitted development generally available and Heathrow noise designation the main additional consideration.

Planning note. Designations change, and two neighbouring streets can sit under entirely different rules. We confirm the conservation area status, any Article 4 direction and the relevant local policy for your specific address at survey stage — before any design work is paid for.

Local FAQs

Building in Hounslow — common questions

It depends entirely on the address. Much of Chiswick is in a conservation area and several carry Article 4 directions, which remove the permitted development rights that would otherwise cover it. We confirm the designation before any design work.

They carry flood risk designation affecting floor levels and construction detail, and access along the river at Strand on the Green and Isleworth is often restricted. Both are manageable, but both need pricing honestly rather than discovering on site.

Straightforward rear extensions, hip-to-gable loft conversions and garage conversions on interwar and post-war stock, usually with good permitted development headroom.
